The information/rulkes is in the May 1994 issue of QST
magazine, pages 132 and 133.
I don't know if anyone posts them to this forum or to an

Hope that helps.

Subject: [Q] your opinion for BEST HF PacTOR rig ?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I saved a few $$. Currently using a Ten Tec Omni-V and looking
for an upgrade to a new rig. {I don't hear anything about a new
OMNI-7 ?? did anyone pick up on any rumors at Dayton ?}
What do you recommend for HF PacTOR ? something that will grow
with new PacTOR modes (PSK ?), run 300 baud G-TOR and have sufficient
audio bandpass,filters selection etc ?.
I see that only the Yaesu has a "RTTY" and "Packet" connector on
the back of the rig. But since most of PacTOR is/will be LSB and
not use the FSK capabilities of the rig - is there an advantage ?
Any suggestions welcomed.

Don't think for a minute that the role of ham radio in the coup
attempt in Russia was lost on those who are working to restrict
our individual freedoms in order to advance their collectivist
agenda. This may not be strictly on topic, but at the same time
we ignore the current trend at our peril. Remember, one of the
early moves Hitler (who was ELECTED to power, by the way) and
Stalin did to consolidate power and stifle opposition was to ban
ham radio!

Maybe you should drop the NIST formerly NBS a line. Their address id
given out on the hour by WWV 'on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHZ...' in
Colorado. Obviously you listen to WWV if you're interested it precision
timekeeping and accurate frequencies...

Without question, the ARRL tapes are the best. I bought some others
(e.g., Ameco) but they were terrible both in production quality and
in terms of the presentation. The ARRL tapes really work. Ten or 15
minutes a day and you'll be moving right along.
I started with the ARRL Into to the Morse code tape about Christmas,
worked thru that and the 5 to 10 WPM tapes next and took my 5 wpm and
13 wpm tests in Feb. Frankly, I think it was a fluke that I passed
13 then, but I have been continuing to practice with the tapes (I'm
finishing up the 10 to 15 WPM tapes now) and certainly, that same 13
wpm test today would be trivial.
Obviously, as they say about mutual funds, past performance is no
guarantee of the future, but my sense of how it's going is that if
I continue the same way, practicing a little bit here and there as
I have time, 20 wpm should be attainable by around the fall.

I am posting this nastygram so everyone can read.
Who died and left you as the guardian of Civil Rights?
It is hard to believe Mass. was the one the leading colonies
to throw off British Oppression in the 1700s when so many
opressionist themseleves live there today.
Further more, you comments by your own guideline are entirely
out of context and should not be posted. Maybe you Postmaster
needs to be notified as well.

Let's lighten up, guys. There are enough anal retentives already.
If your newsreader shows the heading of an article that obviously
doesn't belong, just say 'n' (or whatever). In most newsreaders
positive action must be taken to see an article, so you asked
for it...
On the other hand, the writers of the Constitution protected firearm
ownership because placing power in the hands of citizens is the only
way to defend liberty. And placing effective communications in the
hands of ordinary citizens is another way to bypass Big Brother.
Just think of the AR-15 as a logical accessory for your
now-illegal assult scanner...

Your rejoinder, though misguided and sad, at least was marginally
creative. Your signature-quote, however, is sickening. Next time
you'll probably entertain us all with some dead-baby jokes.
One of the great aspects of amateur radio is that it reflects a
cross-section of society...one of the lesser aspects is that we all
get to see that reflection clearly on a regular basis, and there are
occasionally more pimples than we'd like to see.

Subject: Looking for Icom 551 Opinions & Sellers
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I am looking for:
1) Comments about the Icom 551 6M multimode from people who
have experience with that radio. I know very little about
it. Is the transmitter clean? What about receiver
sensitvity and selectivity? (I want it primarily for use at
a multiop contest station which is running pretty fair power
on other bands. I thus want a receiver that hears well but
won't get trashed and I want a transmitter that won't trash
the other bands). Is it reliable? Is the firmware going to
disappear when the lithium battery goes dead? I assume
that it is capable of FM, for both simplex and repater use.
Are there option boards to look for (filters, CTCSS, etc)?
Does it come in high and low power models (A & H)? What
kind of power output can I expect? Is it adjustable?
Is there else anything I should know about it before buying
one? What is the going price for a 551 in good condition?
2) Somebody who has a 551 to sell (presuming that I hear the
right answers to the above questions).

Admission is $20 Friday until 3pm, and $5 thereafter. Either way it's
good for both days, so unless you want to be there earlier on Friday,
$5 will get you everything. It's meant to bag mostly sellers, but
also anyone wanting an early look at the goods; most people will go
for Friday evening and Saturday for a single $5 entry fee.
Anyone know if this means entry fee to get in and buy, or a seller's
fee? If it's going to cost me $20 just to get in and look around (plus
$10 in gas to get there and back), I'm not going. I can't afford to
buy much of anything anyway...
